Ryedale Folk Museum

Welcome to Yorkshire’s leading open air museum. There are 13 historic buildings showing the lives of ordinary folk from earliest times to the present day. The Museum lies in the heart of the North York Moors. Set in 3 acres, there are rescued and reconstructed historic buildings including, shops, thatched cruck cottages, Elizabethan manor house, barns and workshops. The museum records the daily life of North Yorkshire people from the earliest inhabitants to 1953.

Gillies Jones Glass

Gillies Jones is the partnership between glassmaker Stephen Gillies and artist Kate Jones. Together they make vibrantly colourful, exquisitely formed blown glass bowls and create unique works ‘Aesculus’; art glass pieces which are in several public collections, including the V&A, London

North Yorkshire Moors Railway

Heartbeat locations

Heartbeat, from Yorkshire TV, is set in the 1960s, and features the community of Aidensfield and its police force. The village of Goathland is in the North York Moors National Park and features as the village of Aidensfield.

Farndale Daffodil Walk

Farndale is a beautiful, deep valley with narrow winding lanes, a patchwork quilt of fields divided by ancient drystone walls. However, the dale is most famous for its daffodils which were once reputed to have been planted by the monks of nearby Rievaulx Abbey.

Dalby Forest

Dalby Forest is situated on the southern slopes of the North York Moors National Park. The southern part of the forest is divided by a number of valleys creating a ‘Rigg and Dale’ landscape whilst to the north the forest sits on the upland plateau.

Mouseman Visitor Centre

Now the famous mouse symbol, found on every item crafted by Robert Thompson’s has an uncertain history. The story told by Robert Thompson himself is that one of his craftsmen remarked that they “We all as poor as church mice” Whereupon Robert carved a mouse on the church screen he was working on. That particular mouse has never been found but it has continued as a trade mark of quality and dedication to craftsman ever since.
