We are spoilt for choice when it comes to eating out within easy reach of Low Penhowe. There are 4 excellent pubs and one very good restaurant, all within 3 miles! The Stone Trough Inn at Kirkham, recommended in “The Good Pub Guide”, is a country inn that offers the ideal combination of a traditional pub and elegant restaurant and over the years has won many awards for its food. The Blacksmiths’s Inn at Westow, “Yorkshire Dining Pub of the Year” as awarded by “The Good Pub Guide” has been completely renovated and again offers a combination of a village pub and restaurant. The Jolly Farmers at Leavening, also mentioned in The Good Pub Guide is a good local pub situated in the heart of the village and offers a good selection of local home cooked dishes combined with a friendly welcoming atmosphere typical to North Yorkshire. The Bay Horse Inn at Burythorpe has been recently renovated throughout and is now a warm and welcoming local pub and restaurant.

The Good Pub Guide describes The Stone Trough Inn as bustling and friendly, this country inn is popular as both somewhere to drop in for a pint and a chat or for an enjoyable meal. The several beamed and cosy rooms have warm log fires, well kept Black Sheep Best Bitter, Tetleys, Timothy Taylors Landlord, and a couple of guests such as Malton Golden Chance, and Theakstons Old Peculier on handpump, and 10 wines by the glass; two lounge areas and the restaurant are no smoking. There are lovely views down the valley, and the inn is handy for Kirkham Abbey and Castle Howard.

The Good Pub Guide describes The Blacksmiths Inn as an unassuming village local which has been carefully reworked into an upmarket dining pub. But the locals haven't been left out: there's usually a group of them on the left of the small black-beamed bar area, perhaps watching football on TV. There are traditional high-backed settles around sturdy stripped tables, each with a fat candle, a big open woodburning stove in the capacious brick inglenook, and a few small engravings (farm animals, scenes from Mr Sponge's Sporting Tour and the like) on the cream walls. A brightly lit focal serving bar has well kept John Smiths, Timothy Taylors Landlord and Tetleys on handpump, and they have good New World wines by the glass .

The Good Pub Guide describes The Star Inn as well as running this first class inn, the friendly young licensees have opened a café in the Walled Garden at Scampston Hall, and now own a traditional butcher in the Market Place in Helmsley which specialises in home-made terrines, British cheeses, cooked meats and so forth. Their bakery/delicatessen, The Corner Shop, selling take-away meals and snacks as well as all manner of delicious goodies, is doing very well indeed, too. The 14th-c pub itself is pretty and thatched and although the emphasis is, not surprisingly, on the super food, there is a proper pubby atmosphere in the bar. This has a dark bowed beam-and-plank ceiling, well polished tiled kitchen range, plenty of bric-a-brac, interesting furniture (this was the first pub that 'Mousey Thompson' ever populated with his famous dark wood furniture), a fine log fire, and daily papers and magazines; as they don’t take bar reservations, it’s best to arrive early to get a seat. There’s also a private dining room and a popular coffee loft in the eaves, and a separate no smoking restaurant. The inventive food uses fish that is delivered daily from Hartlepool, local hen, duck, and guinea fowl eggs, three types of honey from the village, and their own herbs and vegetables; lots of British cheeses, too.

There’s no doubt that the emphasis in this spotlessly kept dining pub is firmly placed on the well prepared food, though they do have two or three real ales, too. The relaxed beamed lounge bar has comfortable settees in red or blue around polished low tables, an open fire in the stone fireplace, and a modicum of carefully placed decorations on the eau de nil walls. Most customers head for the terracotta-walled dining room, which has well spaced farmhouse tables, fresh flowers, and masses of candles at night. Both dining rooms and half the bar area are no smoking.

You could walk past this little bistro in York without realising that it has a hidden gem of its own, a tiny paved garden at the back, tucked away just behind the old city walls.
It's a treat to find somewhere to eat outside when the weather is good and regulars make a bee-line for this delightful garden. The cafe is open from 10am until 10pm (apart from Sunday evenings).
